Has HP Whitelisted / Blacklisted Network Controllers on Desktops / Servers ?

It's very possible it's not a whitelist/blacklist issue yet the behavior is confounding.

I have some super cheap Dell Optiplex PC that have HP NC552SFP controllers in them that work great.

HP’s z230 offering looked great for SFF units with 32GB of ECC so I purchased 3 units and 3 HP NC552SFP controllers to go with them.
The HP z230 units have the latest BIOS (L51 v01.61). None of the PCIe slots are populated in any of the z230 units.  When I install the NC552SFP in either x16 slot the units will not POST.

The power LED is solid blue and the unit gives 5 beep tones for "PnP/PCI initialization problem."

When I install an Intel 4 gigabit ports controller in the z230s it works fine.

NC552SFP are 11 watts max so they're well within z230 power constraints.  I've also tried BIOS defaults and any reasonably related BIOS settings.

I knew HP used to whitelist laptop WiFi controllers and ceased doing that in 2014.  I'd never heard of HP whitelisting non-laptop units before. Yet, I see a gentleman miffed about HP whitelisting SFPs on switches as well.
https://community.hpe.com/t5/Switches-Hu...es/td-p/3909992
These z230 units are 2013 if whitelisting/blacklisting winds up mattering. I see all the z X40 units are even marketed with 10G SFP cards.

Thoughts??

$250 BOUNTY: Intel Compute Stick BIOS mod needed

Hello,

I have a request to either unlock or add the ability to boot to Legacy BIOS mode on my STCK1A8LFC which natively supports only UEFI.

These shipped with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit, but the problem with this product is that the stock OS is such a tight fit that there's no room for even updates!!!

Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bit is installable as well but it is an even TIGHTER fit without any updates, so that's why Intel doesn't support it.

I wiped the internal eMMC so that I have 7.2GB available and have been experimenting with different smaller Linux versions.

Though I can install another version of Linux if I want to, I would love to use this for DOS and older Windows versions without using a VM which the memory capacity (1GB) on this probably would never accommodate anyway.

If I can boot a FAT32-formatted FreeDOS USB stick, then that is the immediate goal and indicates to me I can do what I want with this.

Right now, that is not possible.

I'm willing to pay someone $250 to hack this for me so that I have a flash-able BIOS file.  Intel uses *.BIO format on these.

It's worth it as I'm going to have 12 of these for a hobby/project I'm doing.  I may buy more and sell them as mini Legacy PCs for a small premium to pay the cost of getting this done. These can be had brand new in shrink wrap for $30 each.

If software tools can work, I  can dump the BIOS on my compute stick and email to someone to do the unlock or do a module add so I can use Legacy Boot, but I'm not particularly comfortable doing a hardware dump.

If you're in the U.S. I can just ship you one of these Intel Compute Sticks to modify and test with so you know for sure it works, then you can send back the unit with the *.BIO file which I can use to do an F7 method flash update on the others.  The person who does this for me is welcome to immediately donate the modified *.BIO file to the community once it's proven to work.

The UEFITool I ran on the last version of the BIOS (0038) indicates the possibility a Legacy BIOS already exists but is merely disabled/hidden.

Thank you kindly!

Howdy.

I'm in the process of refitting an old HP laptop into a home server / HTPC, it's mostly for giggles so I don't sweat about bricking it. I do want to try a miniPCI-E to PCI-E extender with either a NIC or graphics for cuda or whatnot. Either way, the whitelist present on the laptop is the only thing keeping me from proceeding.

The laptop is HP Pavilion g7-2352er. The only available BIOS update is located here.
I haven't been successful in dumping the current BIOS, since the original drive is long gone I'm not able to just yank it out of the EFI partition.

Here's an album with pictures of all available options. Sorry for the shoddy quality, but I'm working with a horizontal panel that has exactly one acceptable viewing angle.

Which brings me to advanced options. The laptop won't display boot sequence / bios on external monitor. It also isn't possible to start the laptop with the hall sensor tripped, the power button just doesn't do anything. If I trip the sensor right after starting it up, the attached panel goes off, but still no output to external monitor. No panel connected? No video output till the OS. Is it possible to force the laptop to output to external panel?

The second option that I'd like to have is WoL.

That's about it. So if the above options aren't exactly prone to unlocking, whitelist removal is the only thing I'm looking for.
I'm able to provide any additional info and I'm willing to be a guinea pig for any sort of tests since, as I said above, I won't be crying over the laptop if I brick it. Thank you in advance.

Lenovo G505 bad BIOS flash? No boot!

Good day,

In order to try and diagnose/repair some crashing on the laptop, I decided to perform a BIOS update from version 1.02 to v2.04 (latest for that laptop on Lenovos site).

The flash initiated successfully, rebooted the machine, started flashing BIOS... at 100% the machine rebooted again, but screen remained black (no backlight). No Lenovo logo on boot.

Things tried so far:

-Pulled AC, pulled battery, disconnected CMOS battery.
-Tried BIOS recovery.. first I tried to use the .ROM file in the .exe downloaded from lenovos site. Then tried to use a ROM extractor.. also no go. Used Phoenix/Insyde tool to read BIOS, renamed file to VAWGAX64.ROM, but no joy with an empty USB drive.
Also tried VAWGAX64.FN, also no joy. Insyde tool says recovery filename is VAWGAX64.F?, but windows is unable to make such a file name extension.

Does anyone have further ideas as to what to do? Where to go from here? Or am I Ship out of luck?

Laptop in question is a Lenovo G505 (S/N CB23189137) with an AMD A6 APU.

Hello, I have heard that people on this forum (such as dudu) know how to mod BIOSes for the Thinkpad W540 to do things like unlock the advanced menu and enable overclocking

It would be awesome if someone here would be able to help me since I haven't found a W540 mod available for download anywhere else

If it helps my specific model is the W540 with the i7 4700mq and the Quadro K1100m

I will be able to get any other necessary information when the laptop arrives in the mail in a week and I will be able to flash the BIOS when the chip programmer arrives in two weeks

Thanks!  Smile

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to add links to download the BIOS, all I can find is the updater utility that is on Lenovos website, when my laptop arrives I will see what I can do about getting a BIOS dump

Hi guys

I need your help. I have got this laptop (hp g62-b22sl) with a corrupted BIOS. It runs on insyde H20 BIOS ( latest version f48).
I have flashed a custom modded BIOS and everything seemed to work fine. When i rebooted the laptop black screen +caps lock flash ( corrupted BIOS). Win+b ( or v or arrows) didn't work so I have send the motherboard to a firm that has a BIOS flasher.
Big problem though: they have flashed a wrong BIOS image ( from other hp laptop). Now i can only Power up the laptop and open BIOS. I can t install any os and i can't boot a winpe image or a live Linux cd. I cant enter DOS though with a bootable DOS usb ( but hp won't tell me how ti flash BIOS in a DOS envrioment).
Again win+b ecc doesn't work.

What can I do?
Thanks in Advance and Sorry for bad english ( I am italian actually)

Hi everyone.
I have a problem with unlocking AHCI mode in bios for Netbook Samsung N510 (manufacture date 2009)
I have the original bios file in exe extension but managed to extract wph file by hex calulator.
Is there anyone that could modify this bios (phoenix bios) to manage SSD Gigabyte 256gb (GP-GSTFS31256GTND)?
In zip there is a self updating bios file and in other attachment is an extracted wph file.
Can anyone modify or add strig to be enable to use AHCI mode?
My bios is updated with this one below so after unlocking would I upgrade it with this modified bios?

Other question.
I have 4gb ram as there is only one slot. I see only 3gb ram in the OS but the memory is used for Nvidia ION 512mb.
Is there a way to attach on hard 512mb of ram to Nvidia and rest 3,5gb for OS?
I have only Atom N270 cpu in 32bit and it doesn't have 64bit support or 36bit PAE

Hi comrades,

I suppose you guys have a pretty busy schedule out there..
But if you have a few moments to spare, and have a charitable soul, can you make that bios (below) more cooperative, so that he let me plug my big egpu in is tiny little pcie 1x hole...
I think it's a whitelist issue, black screen from the abyss (not the movie) when booted up...

My config is :
Laptop : Asus K53TK (amd chip of course..)
BIOS : AMI v206
EGPU : exp gdc v8 with geforce gtx 1050 Ti

The very best regards,

Fruity
