NVMe boot for Lenovo Carbon X1 3rd Generation (ThinkPad)

$

Hi all,

I currently looking to try and get the Carbon X1 3rd Gen to boot from an NVMe M.2 drive. I understand that Lenovo didn't add the ability (or turned off the ability) to boot from an NVMe drive into their BIOS revisions and was wondering if there would be a way to mod the existing mod version to allow it, either by injecting the DXE file or turning the setting back 'on'.

The current BIOS version is 1.28 and can be found here. I'm currently using the Clover-boot method via USB to boot to my NVMe drive (Samsung 970 Evo 250GB). Windows, MacOS (as a hackintosh) and Linux see and can use the NVMe drive when they've loaded, it's just the BIOS not playing ball; you get the error message "2103: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2)" on boot.

The BIOS files are in .FLx format, which I believe are a compressed file format?

Can anyone help? I'm sure there's a fair few Carbon X1 3rd Gen users out there after the same thing too! Big Grin

Thanks,

YesiamNovas

Bricked Lenovo Y410P BIOS

Hi BIOS community Smile,

I have a Lenovo Y410P laptop and I recently made the mistake of trusting (and running) Lenovo's current BIOS update (3.08), which appeared to finish running the flash utility and restart the laptop, but after restarting it does not post. Upon pressing the power key the display never turns on, the power light and keyboard LED's turn on and are illuminated for ~10 seconds before the laptop power cycles and tries again infinitely.

I tried researching the problem for the past 2 days and have tried creating a FAT16, 1Gb partition on an 8Gb USB-pen drive (the other 7Gb is unpartitioned/unformatted) and loading the Crisis BIOS .bin file ("Yx01.bin"), as per an online guide found here. Using the Fn+R, (or Fn+B) keys I have had no results, unfortunately. It seems the laptop is indifferent to the keys I hold down. I have tried 12 or so different combinations I've seen online but none of them seem to have an effect. The USB drive's activity LED illuminates steadily for a second immediately after power-up, then never again until the next power cycle.  I believe this is just a normal power-up effect however, as the same happens to the LED's on a USB keyboard I tried attaching. Perhaps the USB is not set-up correctly, or the problem goes deeper...

Being thorough.. I've also tried WINCRIS from the linked guide but no amount of compatibility/administrator options could make the program run, I'm hoping to try it again tomorrow on another computer (without Windows 10).

I don't think my skills can take me any further so I'm reaching out to all of you with greater experience who might be able to save my beloved laptop!

Thank you in advance!!

Avery

Hey,
i have a Lenovo L540 with a bad Bios. First it just showed the Lenovo Logo and a Time Error. "real time clock error". And i was not able to enter the Bios.
I took a Dump with a CH341A Programmer and tried to flash an other dump from the Internet. Now the Notebook powers on immediately after plugging in the power cord. The fan rotates and the screen is black!

What can i do?

I added the dump i took before i tried to reflash the chip and the File from the Lenovo Homepage.

i hope you can help me
best regards

[REQUEST] ThinkPad X230 Tablet BIOS mod (& some questions first)

This is my first post here, hope I didn't post in the wrong section

Hello everyone, I decided to flash a modded BIOS on my ThinkPad X230 Tablet, mainly to remove the WLAN whitelist, but also for other stuff.
I'm currently waiting for the SOIC8 clip I ordered to arrive, but in the meantime, I have a few questions:

  1. This forum has a section dedicated to whitelist removals, where should I post if I wanted to do that along with other stuff?
  2. I'll be using a Raspberry Pi 3 B. Just to be safe, I decided to test all the pins I'll be connecting to the chip, and I found CS# to be outputting 3.12V constantly. Is it supposed to do that?
  3. Can voltage control and/or clock control be unlocked?
  4. I want to perform these mods in order of importance: WLAN whitelist removal, unlock of the Advanced menu, voltage/clock control, eGPU fix, WWAN whitelist removal. All are of these compatible with one another?
  5. What other cool stuff could be achieved by modding the Lenovo BIOS (no plans on installing coreboot)?
  6. Can I keep the security chip enabled with a custom BIOS? I'm asking because I have BitLocker enabled, which AFAIK stores the keys using the security chip. What about Secure boot (Windows won't retrieve the BitLocker unlock key if I disable that)
  7. If Lenovo releases a BIOS update, would it be possible to "unlock" some way to flash and patch via software? I'm asking because I don't have a Raspberry Pi myself, and are instead borrowing one.

Yeah it's a dinosaur, I saw a hack on here to upgrade the processor. But I wondered if someone could hack anymore into it. More ram or maybe give the onboard graphics more ram to share? Oh don't know if it's related but my bios sees 4 gigs of RAM but the OS only sees 3gig.(yes it is a 64 bit OS) id like to give that lost gig of ram to the graphics if I could.

I made a video based on the guide here

Hello!, is possible to unlock/upgrade microcode to support Lynnfield CPUs? this is a OEM motherboard, i suppose it has a artificial limitation to support only clarkdale CPUs, when the Intel H55 supports all 1156 CPUs, if you found any other stuff to unlock in this bios it will be great!

last thing the ugly oem splash logo, could be removed?

PEGATRON IPMIP-H55-INSPUR Ver 1.02

motherboard is working fine with a core i5 650 (clarkdale)

i got a core i5 750 (Lynnfield) so i hope i can use it with this motherboard :-(

the bios is directly extracted from the Motherboard with AFUdos.

Looking for help fixing a bios image (16Mb) to flash in the Winbond w25q128fv chip. Also looking for a 1Mb image for the w25q80dv chip (Is this the EC controller?).

I grabbed corrupted images, perhaps the clip was not well hooked. When I emptied the chips and flashed over, the laptop bricked. Start + B doesn't seem to work. The diagnostics light indicate either bios failure or EC firmware issue.

PS: How come SureStart could not recover? Is it within the w25q128fv chip?

I have a pretty weird motherboard. I want to get into bios modding but I have no idea what I am looking at most of the time. I have a few questions.
Here are my questions:
1. Are bioses somewhat universal or are they motherboard specific?
2. I have such a weird motherboard that I am not sure if there will be a modded bios for it (probably not). Are there any other alternatives if there aren't any modded bioses?
3. If I have a motherboard that has an American Megatrends bios on it can I install any AMI bios?

4. Is there a place that you would recommend for learning about bioses?

If you are wondering what my PC specs are then here you go:

Motherboard - Pegatron IPM17-dd
PSU - EVGA 600W Bronze 80+
CPU - I7 6700
GPU - Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050TI
RAM - 16GB DDR3L - 1600 PC3L - 12800 MB/s

Drives - 1. (128GB SSD) Lite-On LCS-128GB 6Gbps SATA
            2. (2TB HDD) Western Digital 5400RPM SATA
            3. (300GB HDD) Western Digital SATA
            4. (4TB HDD) Western Digital USB

This computer is a modified HP Envy 750-177c. If you look this PC up on HP's website it will say it has a IPM17-dd Odense motherboard which isn't the one I have. Mine is green and doesn't have an M.2, not sure if it matters.

Sony VPCZ1 had unlocked the Advanced Menu & hacked the EFI Menu

My Sony VPCZ1200 has an Insyde Bios V3.5, I had unlocked the advanced menu with the method Here.
My BIOS version is R3031C3. The unlocked ROM named NEW.ROM.
But it still have some menu to be hidden, like EFI Boot menu.

I used Uefitool.exe to load the NEW.ROM and extract the SetupUtility module and saved as a FFS file. Then use
Universal IFR extractor.exe to decompile it to a TXT file. Open the TXT file you will find some hidden menus linke EFI Boot
were forward by the sentence SUPPRESS IF TRUE, the corresponding OP_Code were 0A 03 00 27 02,
it test something true and hidden the menu. Now if we changed it to SUPPRESS IF FALSE {0A 03 00 28 02},
when it test something true, the menu will not be hidden.

I use WinHex.exe to open the FFS file, then replace 0A 03 00 27 02 with 0A 03 00 28 02, it replace more then 70 times.
Saved the modified FFS file and use the Uefitool to replace the SetupUtility module with this FFS file.  The hacked ROM
was saved as NEW28.ROM. You can use Insyde H2OEZE-W.exe to change the version and modify the the default setup
Values. Finally I use Flash1t.exe to write the NEW28.ROM to my SONY. Power on and press F2 to enter BIOS,
firstly you need to get default values then enter other menus, otherwise it maybe halted. I had met one time.
Enter other menu you will find some new selection.

I choose  EFI boot and external device boot first. Then insert a UEFI bootable USB to test it but the system still enter HD disk C.
The normal WIN7 was start.

Now I am searching how to enter UEFI Boot. Someone says it need to add some EFI modules  to enter EFI Boot.
I will be very grateful if someone could give me some direction.

-----------------------------------------------
BIOS Software: Insyde.
WRONG BIOS version: A5WAB 1.32
WRONG model: V3-572G

Hello guys, my computer BIOS version is wrong model. I have some torubles with that, like soundcard and vga drivers, turbo boots and ACPI problems. I'm trying to update bios with manifacturers original bios update software, but i can not. I can update same bios (the wrong one), but when i try to change bios version to original model, Insyde won't let me update because of bios version/model compare etc. i tried tricky methods, and i use HXD to edit Insyde bios files (BDW.fd and platforms.ini) to disable all flashing protections, like "don't compare bios version, Project model protect checking disable, All protection disable" etc, but can not success. when i try to force flash original version, Insyde original DOS kind update screen tell me "Invalid Firmware!!!" error.

So i decided to purchase HW Programmer, i bought CH341A USB programmer and i get new brand W25Q64 SPI. I programmed new flash chip with correct model BIN, that i found on internet. I solder the new chip i just programmed to mainboard, but it doesn'T work. Power led lights up, fan start rotating and few second laters shuts down, and few seconds later automaticly power led on, fan starts again.. and few sec later shuts down. an so on. So i tried couople of BIN files from internet, none of em was working. When i solder back the original (but the worng model bios chip) it's working, but with issues..

I quick checking manually programmed flash memory and verfy chi, everyting looks fine, but not working? I dont understand what is the problem, can anyone help me about that?

Thanks..
